That is to say, beginning a joint fitness program before exchanging vows can yield lasting relationship benefits.

”You`re improving your physiques together and developing pride in each other,” Brian Goldstein, senior manager at the Manhattan Plaza Health Club in New York, tells the July/August issue of Bridal Guide magazine. ”It`s pretty powerful.”

Sports psychologist Sherry Newsham adds that tandem workouts can increase individual motivation. ”It makes a big difference if you have someone out there doing it with you,” she says.

Yet, because it`s unlikely that you and your intended have identical athletic abilities, it`s important to orchestrate a regimen that incorporates a variety of sports and workouts.

Some tips:

– Identify your goals. Do you want to lose weight, get in shape, or just enhance well-being?

– Aim for 20 minutes of exercise three times a week-the minimum amount recommended by most experts-and schedule definite, mutually convenient times. – Vary the activities so you won`t become bored with a routine. And plan for contingencies. An exmple: if you`ve planned to bike outdoors and it rains, have some at-home workout videos at the ready to substitute.

– Beware of excessive competition. A little can spur you on, but too much is counter-productive.
