Several leading Chicago-area artists and about 450 of their art patrons mingled last weekend to make Catholic Charities` Lake County division more than $40,000 greener. The fundraiser, which kicked off a three-day Lake Forest Art Expo, painted a bright picture for its sponsors, the charity`s Women`s Board.
”We exceeded last year`s benefit of $39,000,” said board member Denise O`Leary. ”In this recessionary year, everybody is happy if they meet or exceed last year. Times are tough.”
”It was a fun show. And we feel we did well,” said board president Madeleine McMullan.
The show also accomplished board member Ellie Clarke`s mission. Clarke pulled together a core of four other civic-minded women four years ago with three goals in mind: ”We wanted more visibility in the county, more volunteers, and, of course, more money for programs.”
So for a benefit they looked for something with high visibility and appeal. ”A benefit dinner buffet held among wonderful works art provided a more relaxed atmosphere. And it was unique,” said benefit co-chairwoman Judy Arend.
Art patrons and Catholic Charities supporters Maureen and E.B. Smith agreed that the show will build in popularity. ”I have a feeling this show will grow and grow. It`s very professional,” Maureen Smith said. She ought to know; she is a Museum of Contemporary Art trustee.
Her husband liked the show`s ”high quality” and ”top-notch”
participants, such as the Struve Gallery. He ought to know; he`s a trustee of the Art Institute of Chicago.
The benefit dollars help support the charity`s self-sufficiency programs.
