Soup Dragons
Hotwired (Mercury) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
The Soup Dragons aren`t just another British band infatuated with American soul music of the `60s. ”Hotwired,” the Scottish foursome`s follow- up to 1990`s ”Lovegod,” does little to pull distance from the retro sound pervasive among groups from across the big pond. Hip raveups such as the leadoff tunes ”Pleasure” and ”Divine Thing” crank with Sean Dickson`s sarcastic lyrics and soulful backing by falsetto crooner and guitarist Jim McCulloch. Somewhat sterile drumming drags the uncharacteristically sleepy
”Forever Yesterday,” an overproduced, dubbed ode to new-age music. Nevertheless, the troupe expands its instrumental repertoire-normally festooned primarily with wah-wah guitar effects-with strings (”Forever Yesterday”) and blues harp (”Running Wild”).
