Nirvana`s name and music may not be familiar in most circles, but the group`s low-profile status is changing.

The band`s latest album, ”Nevermind,” has gone gold and has reached the top of the music charts. For those who need an introduction, Nirvana is a loud, hard-core trio responsible for the Top 10 hit ”Smells Like Teen Spirit.”

The band formed in 1987, when guitarist/vocalist Kurt Cobain met bassist Chris Novaselic in their hometown of Aberdeen, Wash.

Two years later, Cobain and Novaselic put together their debut album,

”Bleach,” on the Sub-Pop label, a Seattle-based independent record label that`s practically synonymous with the heavy melodic punk scene.

”Bleach” took only three days and $600 to make. Cobain said that amount reflects the album`s quality-cheap.

”I couldn`t even name the songs on the album,” he told Spin magazine.

Still, ”Bleach” sent the band on a U.S. tour, which led to a contract with Geffen Records.

In 1990, Virginia native Dave Grohl joined the Nirvana lineup on drums. Together, the trio released ”Nevermind.”

The band`s latest release, ”Come as Your Are,” features a hypnotic groove and Cobain with a calm voice and intelligible words.

Now Nirvana is referred to by its fans as one of the hottest acts of the 1990s. The group`s concerts are billed as events not to be missed.
