A league of their own: Real estate agents and restaurant owners are licking their chops as the opening nears for Sears, Roebuck and Co.`s new Merchandise Group headquarters in Hoffman Estates. But they aren`t the only ones panting at the thought of 5,000 new customers flowing in and out of town each day.
The folks at Poplar Creek Bowl, 2354 W. Higgins Rd., a few miles up the road, are pinning their hopes for more patrons on Sears as well.
”I`m ecstatic that it`s a big corporation coming out here. We`re preparing to do some great advertising with them,” says Rich Griggs, general manager of Poplar Creek Bowl, which opened only last September.
Nancy Shultis, the facility`s bowling manager, says Sears managers already have toured the place as part of an after-hours party sponsored by the Hoffman Estates Chamber of Commerce. ”They`ve played billiards,” Shultis says, ”they`ve been in our lounge.”
Griggs isn`t counting pins before they`ve fallen, though. At the very least, he says, ”I`m hoping we can fill a whole league from them.” With bowlers to spare, we`re sure.
