Martin Jack Rosenblum
The Holy Ranger`s Free Hand (Flying Fish) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
If Bob Dylan lived in Milwaukee and had a fixation with portraying the biker as the modern-day incarnation of the Old West outlaw, he might sound something like Martin Jack Rosenblum. The self-styled ”Holy Ranger” is a
`60s folk-blues singer turned biker poet who often performs at gatherings of Harley-Davidson aficionados. Singing in an oddly transfixing deadpan voice, Rosenblum celebrates the biker mythos with his surreal, stream-of-consciousness lyrics. He sings of ”horses of steel” and ”visionary journeys,” and opines in the Dylan-esque ”Coming Off the Prairie,” ”An American eagle doesn`t scavenge like a crow.” Fellow Milwaukeeans Victor DeLorenzo and Brian Ritchie of the Violent Femmes and Mike Hoffman of Semi-Twang help fill out the sound, but its Rosenblum`s hypnotic imagery that makes this offbeat album alluring.
