Hurricane Season (Philo) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2
Songwriters don`t get any better than Tom Russell, and on his third album he shows why he`s mentioned in the same breath as folk-oriented contemporaries like Bill Morrissey, John Gorka and John Prine. In his wobbly baritone, Russell sings about railyard hobos (”Lord of Trains”), American heroes
(”Jack Johnson”) French chanteuse Edith Piaf (”Chocolate Cigarettes”)
and the tragic Happyland Social Club fire in New York (”A Dollar`s Worth of Gasoline”). Russell`s literate leanings are given plenty of musical muscle by a superb band.
