They`ve been mistaken for a self-help group of disenchanted divorcees and former girlfriends of Gulf War soldiers. But what THE X-GIRLFRIENDS really like to do is create public art that makes people think. Hence their billboard at the Chicago Avenue stop of the Ravenswood L.

There are images of Elvis on a plate, Marilyn Monroe on a clock, John Lennon on a mug, and Jesus Christ on a crucifix, and this quote: ”One of these things is just like the others . . . ”

The billboard is group`s latest effort to circumvent the ”elitism” of the gallery system, according to Kulov, the group`s Bulgarian-born co-founder who uses only his last name.

And what, exactly, is the message? ”There`s really no direct answer,”

Kulov explains. ”The reason we leave it ambiguous is so that anyone is free to interpret the billboard.”
