Gregson and Collister
The Last Word (R.N.A.) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2
The appropriately titled ”The Last Word” appears to be the swan song from the critically acclaimed British folk-rock duo of Clive Gregson and Christine Collister. After six years and nearly as many albums together, the two are splitting up both as an act and as a couple. While Gregson either wrote or co-wrote all 11 songs here, he and the husky-voiced Collister alternate on lead vocals, but regardless of who is singing the overall tone is dark, the soundtrack to a crumbling relationship. The themes run from deceit
(”Here I Go Again,” ”I Could Be So Happy”) to betrayal (”I Know Something”), desertion (”Snow in Philadelphia”) and anger (”Last Man Alive”). It`s only on the final song, ”Could This Be the One?” that Gregson offers any hope that love can strike again.
