John Renbourn and Stefan Grossman
In Concert (Shanachie) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
Once upon a time, folks would go to dimly lit, smoke-filled coffeehouses
(not to be confused with Starbucks) to hear the kind of acoustic music presented on this recorded-in-concert video. Now, however, outside of the Old Town School of Folk Music and a few other time-honored venues, mostly near college campuses, it`s difficult to find and enjoy such virtuoso guitar work. From innovative interpretations of Mingus and Fahey, to a joyous rendition of the ancient hipster anthem ”Take a Whiff on Me,” Renbourn and Grossman have a ball bouncing from jazz to folk to blues and back again. Nothing fancy here, just two talented guys in lumberjack shirts, on a bare stage, pickin` and grinnin`. Old fashioned, perhaps, but refreshing.
