The film ”Hear My Song” is about the legendary Irish tenor Josef Locke. In the `50s, he fled England to avoid arrest for tax evasion and soon became a romantic figure, with frequent sightings reported and a cadre of imposters.
In the movie, Irish actor Adrian Dunbar plays an ambitious, young concert promoter in England. First he hires a Locke imposter. Then he travels to Ireland to find the reclusive Josef Locke, played by Ned Beatty.
”It`s slightly old-fashioned and anarchic in the way that very serious comedy is,” says Dunbar.
Dunbar is pleased at how well the romance plays. ”There are some beautiful poetic themes running through the film,” he says.
Dunbar says it`s too early to define the flourishing, contemporary Irish cinema; ”The Commitments,” ”My Left Foot” and ”The Miracle” are all very different. But he does say that all the recent Irish films ”are accessible and universal and deal with the small man and the big issue.”
