Falling From Grace (Mercury) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
The film ”Falling From Grace,” which marks rocker John Mellencamp`s acting and directing debut, has received mixed reviews, and has yet to open in Chicago. This may be a case where the soundtrack outshines the film, as Mellencamp has assembled an eclectic group of singers and songwriters to contribute music to his film about a disenchanted country singer. The album`s centerpiece is Mellencamp`s ”Sweet Suzanne,” credited to the Buzzin`
Cousins, an ad hoc group made up of Mellencamp, John Prine, Dwight Yoakam, Joe Ely and James McMurtry. Yoakam goes solo on ”Common Day Man,” while Prine`s ”All the Best” finds him in typically wry form. Former Mellencamp lead guitarist Larry Crane contributes several songs, the best of them the powerful ”Whiskey Burnin.”` Nanci Griffith`s pristine vocals highlight ”Cradle of the Interstate,” while Janis Ian`s ”Days Like These” benefits from some additional muscle provided by Mellencamp`s band. Ironically, the two songs that feature Mellencamp are among the album`s few forgettable performances.
