Gospel Hummingbirds
Steppin` Out (Blind Pig) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2
Gospel music is about making a joyful noise, and Oakland`s Gospel Hummingbirds practically raise the roof with their sweet harmonizing on
”Steppin` Out.” Few other gospel groups so successfully blur the lines between gospel and rhythm and blues as the five-man Hummingbirds, who these days perform at nearly as many clubs and blues festivals as they do traditional gospel venues. They`ve recently sung on albums by the Fabulous Thunderbirds and Huey Lewis, and on ”Steppin` Out” they get some help from Robert Cray`s rhythm section. Not that they need much help. Swap the word
”baby” for ”Lord” on just about any of the 12 tracks and you`ve got a soul album that stands up to just about anything that came out of Stax Records in the `60s.
