Sarah McLachlan
Solace (Arista) (STAR)(STAR) 1/2

With a stark, dirge-like approach to her music, Canadian singer/
songwriter (10 of 11 songs in ”Solace” are hers) Sarah McLachlan is immediately remindful of the Cowboy Junkies` Margo Timmins and current pop rage Enya. Her oh-so-sincere readings lend a distinct air of melancholy to songs that are not without some poetic beauty. McLachlan`s wispy voice has sufficient strength to carry the introspective messages, and her band supports her with light and jazzy groove. As they all fall into the same somber emotional range-even Donovan`s breezy ”Wear Your Love Like Heaven” is strangely leaden-no one piece really stands out, though ”Into the Fire” has the most chart potential.
