Johnny Most, the former voice of the Boston Celtics whose most famous line was ”Havlicek stole the ball,” could have had a field day Saturday at Evans Field House.
”Hill stole the ball . . . Jeske stole the ball . . . Conner stole the ball . . .”
Northern Illinois` women`s basketball team recorded a school-record 37 steals in a 103-54 blowout of Wright State. The total was one shy of the NCAA record of 38, set by Grambling against Texas College Dec. 10, 1989.
Dee Dee Jeske led the scoring with 21 points. Cindy Conner had 19, E.C. Hill 16 plus eight steals.
The Huskies (13-9, 7-2) travel to Valparaiso Tuesday and play host to Illinois-Chicago Thursday in North Star Conference games. They visit Florida State Saturday.
– Tough competition: Northern gymnasts won two events but couldn`t overcome Michigan or Louisiana State in a meet Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich. The host Wolverines scored 189.25 points, LSU 186.25 and NIU 185.20. The Huskies` Lori Lebo and Dayna Lia shared the vault title at 9.70. Vicki Thimgan had the top score (9.70) on beam.
– Clark`s revenge: Dave Clark never lost to Wisconsin-Milwaukee when he coached the NIU men`s swimmers, and he hasn`t lost to the Huskies in his first year at Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Panthers swept NIU Saturday, their women winning 134-103 and the men 128-113. Northern won six of the 11 events in both meets, but Milwaukee`s depth was the difference.
