Driscoll got caught lacking at the free-throw line in the fourth quarter and suffered its first loss of the season to visiting Aurora Christian, 72-58, Tuesday night in Addison.
Driscoll was victimized by Aurora Christian`s 14-of-18 free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter. Six free throws in the first two minutes of the final quarter helped the Chargers move from a 48-44 lead entering the period to a 54-44 advantage.
Aurora Christian (17-5) finished 19 of 30 from the line, while Driscoll
(20-1), No. 20 among Chicago-area powers and the No. 1-ranked Class A team in the state, managed to sink only 12 of 20.
”We`re pleased (with the win) because we accomplished our goal,” said Aurora Central coach Don Davidson. ”This is the time of year we like to be climbing up the ladder. Our guys look in the papers and see we`re not ranked and wonder why.”
Greg Phillips had 24 points, John Wayne 17, Matt Nadelhoffer 11 and Jason Harrell 10 for Aurora. Mike Kamienski had 20, Mike Vavrek 18 and Scott Meyers 14 for Driscoll.
”Every time you play a quality team especially during the end of the season you want to do well,” said Driscoll coach Mark Kleeman. ”This is the first time we`ve been outshot at the free-throw line as far as I can recall. Normally, we`re at the free-throw line because our guys usually do a lot of driving to the basket.”
