Keith Brown may have to miss only the next three Blackhawk games. The team hopes to have the experienced defenseman back in uniform for the Feb. 16 game in Chicago against Calgary.

Brown sprained an ankle last week in Calgary when Theoren Fleury rode him into the sideboards.

In other medical news, Stephane Matteau had a cast refitted for his broken foot Monday and Dan Vincelette is in the process of getting a cast for his injured knee. Both wingers should be out at least another month.

Slow starters: Coach Mike Keenan isn`t disturbed at the statistic, but the Hawks haven`t scored more than one goal in the first period of any of the last 20 games, and that they have scored two or more goals just 11 times all season in that period in 54 games?

”We have about the same number of first-period goals as last season,”

Keenan said. ”Maybe we take a more defensive posture in the first period, and play it tighter. That approach is good to take on the road. Statistics can be made to say anything. Look at how few goals we have allowed lately, too.”
