Bob Franke
In This Night (Flying Fish) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
New Englander Bob Franke is one of contemporary folk music`s more respected singer-songwriters, and if a collection of songs sung from the heart is your kind of thing, this album is well worth seeking out. Franke`s serious songs tend to be reflective, and the most affecting of them is
”Predictions,” a haunting tale of a childhood friend`s lingering death from AIDS. Franke is occasionally overly earnest, but when he lightens up a bit, as on the paranoid fantasy ”Invasion of the Money Snatchers,” his best work emerges. ”I`m a Mainframe, Baby” is a blues for the computer age with the immortal chorus, ” `Cause I`m a mainframe, baby, I got a hard disk, too/ And I can do 20 times what that mini-floppy driver can do,” before lamenting (with apologies to Muddy Waters), ”I got my modem workin`, but I just can`t get online with you!” Who says folk music isn`t relevant in the
`90s?
