Can`t get a good night`s sleep? Call the slumber experts at the Indiana University Center for Sleep Disorders. Calling 800-7-SANDMAN will plug you into the advice and resources of sleep-lab technicians who can help you discover why you`re awake, and provide advice for successful sleeping.

”It was originally called `Operation Sandman,` ” says Dr. James Gaither, medical director of the facility, which began the resource to help anxious families of Persian Gulf war soldiers.

The hot line has proved so popular (it has logged nearly 1,000 calls since its launch in March 1991) that it has continued to remain open from 7 p.m. to about 6 a.m., Chicago time, Sunday through Friday.

Some callers may have serious sleep disorders, for which the hot line makes resource and treatment facility referrels. But many just need help for occasional sleeplessness.

What`s best? Maintain a regular bedtime and avoid stimulants, which include caffeine and nicotine, says Gaither. For insomnia sufferers who need immediate relief? Relaxation techniques can help.

Also, ”Sit up for about 20 minutes,” he advises. ”And the old remedy of reading a boring book and drinking warm milk probably isn`t a bad idea. It gives them something to do.”
