Is designer Donna Karan fashioning a political statement?

”In Women We Trust” is the theme of the new print advertising campaign for Karan`s creations. Scheduled to begin in mid-January in U.S., European, and Asian fashion magazines, the campaign depicts a female political candidate running for and winning an election. But which office is it?

”We`re not saying it`s presidential,” says Peter Arnell, executive creative director of the Arnell/Bickford advertising agency, which crafted the campaign. ”It`s generic politics.”

Still, Arnell allows that Karan`s advertising ”communicates her feelings about the culture. With so many things being down at the moment, it just seemed like a real opportunity to say that maybe women are the answer to helping and promoting new hope.”

Adds Karan, who couldn`t be reached for comment, but told Women`s Wear Daily: ”This campaign is saying: Women should go for it. We need you now.”

Oh, yes, it`s also saying, ”Buy Donna Karan clothes.” In the five-photograph black-and-white series in which the candidate goes from pressing the flesh to taking the oath of office, model Rosemary McGrotha wears softly tailored career looks from the designer`s spring collection.
