I would like to suggest an exercise for Mr. Lichten and those who agree with him. He should find out what those people in Danville would be pulling down per month at the rate of approximately $6 an hour (less taxes), and attempt to live on that amount himself over the next three years. And he should pretend that his house and his car are not yet paid for, and that he has children who occasionally need medical care. It would be enlightening, even if he would try it in Danville.
There are two things that Mr. Lichten and the executives of manufacturing firms seeking lower labor costs seem to ignore. The first is that people who make low wages cannot afford to buy the things the manufacturers wish to sell them. The second is that the jobs of assembly line workers are not the only jobs that can be shipped out of this country.
What is going to happen when the people in the manufacturing countries realize that they can make much more money for themselves if they do an end run around the self-rewarded American executives who have built them their factories?
We need less greed and more creative thinking.
