Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters

Surrounded by Love (Black Top) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2

Former Roomful of Blues guitarist Ronnie Earl`s assured playing on his sixth solo album demonstrates that he can hold his own with the best of them. Earl represents the blues guitarist as musical chameleon, playing equally well in a variety of blues styles. He effortlessly alternates between introspective, legato lines on slow blues such as ”That`s When My Soul Comes Down” and in-your-face, razor-sharp flurries of notes on the uptempo jump blues, ”Kathy`s Theme.” Using a fat guitar tone on ”Akos” and ”Off the Hook,” Earl expertly conjures up the classic organ combo milieu of the `50s.
