20 years and counting: When a time capsule is buried to commemorate a specific event, plans usually call for it to be reopened in 100 years or so. But the managers at outlet mega-mall Gurnee Mills apparently were so caught up in the discount spirit that they decided to also cut the time span of the time capsule they planted Dec. 17.
”Our time capule will be opened in 20 years by the mayor of Gurnee-whoever that is at the time,” Marianne Musso, the mall`s community relations director, said recently. Current Mayor Dick Welton helped bury the capsule at ceremonies also attended by representatives of the mall management team and the mall developer, Western Development Corp. of Washington, D.C.

Entertainment was provided by the Daniel Wright Middle School Choir from Lake Forest. ”It was a sort of symbolic thing, a handing over of the baton from the developer to the mall managers. It wasn`t a big event, but it was important to us,” Musso said.
Items in the capsule, which is buried near mall Entrance B, include a world champion Chicago Bulls T-shirt, a Wheaties cereal box with a picture of Michael Jordan, newspapers from Aug. 8, which was the day the mall opened for business, an aerial photo of the mall taken the same day, Gurnee Mills advertising items, and business cards of the mall and management staff.
