Perfect noses are out and natural noses are in.
That`s the word from a New York plastic surgeon who says that it`s quite a departure from past trends in rhinoplasty, and one that`s causing her waiting room to fill with patients seeking a `90s-style retooling of noses originally re-crafted as young adults in the 1960s.
”People used to want bobbed noses, almost like a ski lift,” says Dr. Helen Colen, ”where the bridge was flatter and the tip went up in the air.”
Now, ”rather than cute, women want a stronger, more natural-looking nose,” she says.
The reason? Colen says it`s because women have become more self-assured in the work world and society in general, and therefore they`ve become more attuned to a uniquely professional-rather than homogenously pretty-appearance. ”They no longer want someone else`s nose,” says Colen, a cosmetic and reconstructive surgeon on staff at several New York hospitals. ”Now they want their own nose . . . but better . . . maybe just without the bump.”
As for the `90s update requests? Colen and her colleagues often have to resort to cartilage grafts.
”I always tell my patients to stay within conservative boundaries,”
Colen says. ”You can always take more off. It`s very difficult to bring back what was taken away.”
