Illinois basketball fans get their only preseason look at the Illini next Wednesday in an intrasquad scrimmage in the Assembly Hall in Champaign. The scrimmage starts at 7:15 p.m., and tickets are $4.

Coach Lou Henson hopes he has more players available than he did last Saturday in the team`s first full scrimmage.

With only nine scholarship players and two of them-Tim Geers and Robert Bennett-injured, Henson put his best five players on the Blue team, which walloped the Orange 127-67. Tom Michael had 37 points and 13 rebounds, Deon Thomas added 28 points and Rennie Clemons scored 23.

Women`s opener: The women`s team opens its exhibition season Saturday against Athletes in Action in Kenney Gym.

Homeward bound: The road-weary volleyball team returns to Huff Gym to play Iowa and Minnesota this weekend after dropping matches at Purdue and Penn State last week. The Illini lost 3-2 to Purdue and were blitzed 3-0 by Penn State. They fell into a fourth-place tie in the Big 10 with an 8-4 record.

All-Big 10: Laura Simmering, with a seventh-place finish, was the leading Illinois runner in the Big 10 cross-country meet. By finishing among the top seven, she earned All-Big 10 designation. Andy Homoly was the top runner for the men`s squad with a 16th-place finish.

Rough waters: The men`s swimming team already has that sinking feeling after finishing last in the Big 10 Relays in Evanston. The women`s team did a little better, finishing fifth, with the individual medley team scoring the only Illini victory.

Crossing swords: The fencing team opens its season this weekend in the Penn State/Garret Open at State College, Pa. The meet honors Max Garret, former Illinois and Penn State fencing coach. Garret coached 31 years at Illinois and compiled a 245-71-1 record.
