When Charlie Sadler became Northern Illinois` head football coach last December, he promised the Huskies would throw the ball much more than Jerry Pettibone did in his six years at the helm.
Through five games, quarterback Stacey McKinney didn`t have much time to throw, and when he did, he was successful only 30 percent of the time. But in Saturday`s 22-10 loss to Western Michigan, McKinney and Rob Rugai combined to pass for 224 yards, the highest total for the Huskies in 61 games.
Wide receiver Larry Wynn made the most of his opportunities with seven catches for 172 yards. A Huskies receiver hadn`t made that many catches since 1983, when Carl Aikens had seven.
Victory lane: After spotting Cleveland State 1-0 and 2-1 leads Sunday, Northern`s soccer team bounced back with goals from Jay Konrad, Karsten Roy and Andy Lane to prevail 3-2 in Cleveland. The Huskies are now 7-3-1, 3-1 in the Mid-Continent Conference.
Rising stars: The volleyball team (15-3) opened its North Star Conference schedule with victories over Cleveland State 15-7, 15-0, 15-7 and Akron 15-3, 15-2, 16-14 at Evans Field House.
Top gun: Freshman Marty Engel, a former tennis standout at Glenbard West High School, took the first singles title Sunday at the Bowling Green Invitational. He is 5-0 this fall, including the singles title at the Mid-Continent INVITATIONAL.
