Joe Schissler scored two touchdowns and gained 182 yards Saturday, but Brother Rice coach Tom Mitchell was quick to point out he had help.

”Schissler ran well,” said Mitchell, ”but his offensive line helped him immensely. Offense and defense did a real good job up front on the line and that`s where the game was won.”

Won in convincing fashion, as Brother Rice blanked St. Francis de Sales 37-0 in the Catholic League South opener for both teams. Brother Rice (4-1, 1-0) rolled up 286 yards rushing and held de Sales to just 39 on the ground.

Schissler scored on runs of 41 and 4 yards. Mike Kelly added a 22-yard touchdown off a blocked kick and Ed Hrebic and Robert Haney also scored for Brother Rice. St. Francis is 3-2, 0-1.

The Tigers scored two touchdowns in the first 1:17 of the first quarter.

”We were almost flawless in the first half,” said Wheaton Central coach John Thorne.

Barrington 27, Fremd 14-Mark Post hit on 15 of 20 passes, including a 34- yard strike to Paul Trudeau for the go-ahead score, as No. 19 Barrington

(5-0, 1-0) won its Mid-Suburban North opener.

Buffalo Grove 28, Palatine 21-Ray Prindiville had two 8-yard rushing touchdowns and snared a 30-yard TD pass from Mike Rudolph to lift Buffalo Grove (4-1, 1-0) to the Mid-Suburban North win. Palatine, which suffered its first loss of the season, reached the Buffalo Grove 2-yard line with just over four minutes to play, but a penalty ruined the threat.

Joliet Catholic 20, Carmel 6-Mike Alstott provided all the Hilltopper scoring with first-quarter TD runs of 71 and 4 yards, as well as a 40-yard jaunt in the fourth quarter, to lead No. 3 Joliet Catholic (5-0, 3-0) in the East Suburban Catholic.

Glenbard West 21, Oak Park 12-No. 6 Glenbard West (5-0, 2-0), behind Bill Harris (24 carries, 104 yards), used a 14-point second quarter to stay unbeaten in the West Suburban Silver. Jarelle Knox and Darren Dunlap also scored for the Hilltoppers.

Deerfield 30, Glenbrook North 8-Jason Masheris (135 yards rushing) scored on runs of 1 and 58 yards and Dana Lyons (59 yards) chipped in two touchdowns for No. 13 Deerfield (4-1, 1-0) in its Central Suburban North opener.

”Masheris ran hard all day,” said Deerfield coach Paul Adams, who recorded his 201st career coaching victory. ”And you can`t say enough about Dana.”

Glenbrook North (1-4, 0-1) scored on its first possession of the second half when Chris Marnell passed to Ryan McNally, who lateraled the ball to Mike Schenk. Schenk dashed 17 yards for a TD. Two plays later, Masheris broke his 58-yard run.

Andrew 6, Lockport 0-No. 14 Andrew (5-0, 3-0 in the SICA West) scored a first-period touchdown on a 1-yard run by Jeff Amundson and made it stand up. Jeff Pietrzyk had four interceptions for the winners. Lockport, a preseason favorite in the league, dropped to 1-4, 1-1.

Thornton 33, Eisenhower 7-Thornton quarterback Floyd Coleman and tight end Stirling Luckey combined for a pair of 10-yard touchdown passes and Herbert Moore (114 yards on 26 carries), Keith Wordlaw and Adoko Neil had touchdown runs for the 15th-ranked Wildcats (4-1, 2-0 in the SICA East). ”We got off to a slow start, but let`s be honest-they played us well in the first half,” said Thornton coach Bill Mosel, whose team didn`t allow a first down in the second half after leading 14-7 at halftime. ”We`ve got to clean it up a bit before next week, but other than that I was satisfied.”

Benet 13, Marist 12-Benet (3-2, 2-1 in the East Suburban Catholic) scored with 1:40 left to surprise No. 16 Marist (3-2, 1-2), which got two touchdown passes by Steve Janiszewski (10-for-23, 168 yards).

Waubonsie Valley 27, De Kalb 0-No. 18 Waubonsie (5-0, 5-0 in the Upstate Eight) got three touchdown runs from quarterback Broc Kreitz (the longest was 41 yards) and one from Kirk Williams.

Aurora Central 56, Chicago Christian 13-George Monaco (142 yards), Juan Elizondo (129 yards) and Aaron Saling scored two touchdowns apiece for Aurora Central (5-0, 1-0).

Lake Forest 29, Libertyville 0-Lake Forest (5-0, 5-0 in the North Suburban) got a pair of touchdown passes from Todd Ritter to Rich Hoskins and short touchdown runs from Andrew Creath and Scott Rice.

McHenry 40, Dundee-Crown 6-The 1-2-3 punch of Eric Schulze, Jason Faunt and Bill Marinangel led McHenry (5-0, 3-0 in the Fox Valley). Schulze threw two touchdown passes to Faunt and Marinangel scored three times.

Lane 46, Taft 0-Taft had seven turnovers-two fumbles were returned for touchdowns-and Steven McNamara ran for 124 yards and four touchdowns in the Public League North. ”He`s got the speed,” Lane coach Sam Bronswick said of McNamara. Lane (5-0) had 342 total yards and held Taft to just 52.

Stevenson 28, Zion-Benton 21-Stevenson (4-1, 4-0) built a 21-0 first-quarter lead but needed a 1-yard score from Marben Cudia to hold on in the North Suburban. Joe Dant (40 carries, 219 yards) scored twice for Stevenson and Eddie McKennie (168 yards) keyed the comeback for Zion-Benton (3-2, 1-2). ”It was a wild first half,” said Stevenson coach Bill Mitz.

Immaculate Conception 24, Marmion 6-Tony Mondragon scored three times as IC (5-0, 1-0) won its Suburban Catholic opener.

Bremen 22, Thornton Fractional North 14-Bremen (5-0, 1-0 in the SICA Central) won it with short touchdown runs by Terry Dantzler, George Walton and Dan Verble. Dave Hamilton threw TD passes to Dan Weber for both scores for T.F. North (3-2, 0-1).

Willowbrook 35, Morton 0-Tom King tossed three touchdown passes (to Randy Malloy, Ray Scott and Lance Bettini) and Eric Johansen recovered a fumble in the end zone as Willowbrook (5-0, 2-0) rolled in the West Suburban Gold.

Oak Lawn 32, Argo 0-Larry Boerema scored three touchdowns, one on a 60-yard run, and Torey Botti scored one TD and ran for three 2-point

conversions for Oak Lawn (5-0, 3-0 in the SICA North).

Providence 45, Bishop McNamara 14-Chris Orr threw for four touchdowns

(the longest for 88 yards), hitting his brother Justin Orr twice in the end zone as Providence (5-0) remained undefeated. Jeff Schley added two touchdowns on the ground.

Morris 37, Sycamore 7-Jeff Edwards rushed for 128 and three touchdowns and quarterback Todd Schultz was 7 of 13 for 115 yards through the air as No. 17-ranked Morris (5-0, 5-0) stayed unbeaten in the Little Seven.
