Schascle
Haunted by Real Life (Reprise) (STAR)(STAR)
Madonna producer Patrick Leonard has a real find in singer-songwriter Schascle Huygens, plucked out of the obscurity of the Sarasota, Fla., blues scene. Unfortunately, he has done her a disservice by trying to turn the big- voiced Schascle (pronounced ”CHESS-el”) into another Mariah Carey. This slick, glossy production is obviously aimed at the pop/R&B crossover market, and the uninspired backing provided by some of L.A.`s top session stars ends up sanding off any of her rough edges. Still, a few gems emerge. Although it skirts Gloria Estefan territory, ”Can`t Get Love With Money” sounds like a hit, while Schascle`s unbridled, gospel-style vocal on ”Freedom” is nicely augmented by the Andrae Crouch Choir. Still, there`s too much chaff on
”Haunted by Real Life” to register Schascle as anything more than a great voice lacking in musical direction.
