Paul Adams coached his 200th victory at Deerfield, a 30-0 rout Saturday of Maine East. But to hear him talk, you`d think Adams had little to do with those 200 W`s in his 30 years as head coach.

”I`m very honored and very flattered, but in reality, it`s the efforts of a lot of people,” said Adams, 200-51 at Deerfield. ”Anyone who knows about football knows that`s a fact.

”The achievements are terrific. I accept all this for 2,000 players, maybe two dozen coaches and a very strong program. I didn`t know if I`d last three years. They were talking about firing me in the fourth year.”

Deerield, ranked No. 17 in the Tribune poll, raised its record to 3-1.

Quarterback Dana Lyons ran for 86 yards and hit 7 of 13 passes for 97 more. He scored on runs of 4 and 5 yards. Christopher Lim (eight carries, 74 yards) scored on a 1-yard run, and Jason Masheris (eight carries, 62 yards)

added a 6-yard touchdown run.

”We tried to establish our running game and we had a little trouble,”

Adams said. ”Maine East is an improved team. They did a nice job on defense later in the game.”

Loyola 31, Leo 8-Second-ranked Loyola converted three turnovers into 10 points while winning its fourth straight, this time over winless Leo.

James Carroll returned a pass interception 69 yard to the Leo 13-yard line to set up Joe DiBella`s 1-yard scoring run in the second quarter. DiBella also ran three yards to score in the first quarter.

Kevin Correa tacked on a 63-yard punt return for a touchdown four minutes into the second quarter to make it 21-0.

”The super big play was Carroll`s interception return,” Loyola coach John Hoerster said, noting that Leo was down by just a touchdown and driving at the time.

Joliet Catholic 26, St. Joseph 6-Mike Alstott piled up 143 yards on 21 carries and scored on runs of 11, 1 and 27 yards to lead third-ranked Joliet Catholic to the East Suburban Catholic victory in Hillside. Alstott`s touchdowns and another 3-yarder by Brian Bloom fueled Joliet Catholic (4-0, 2-0) to a 26-0 lead before St. Joseph (1-3, 0-2) scored on a 55-yard run by Dennis Hughes near the end of third quarter.

”We talked about coming out flat all week, then we get here and we`re not ready mentally,” Joliet Catholic coach Bob Stone said. ”But even without being keyed up mentally, we can still score points.”

Joliet Catholic totaled 310 yards while limiting St. Joseph to 181.

Fenwick 36, De La Salle 25-Chris Stephens` fourth touchdown, a 1-yard run, clinched the victory for No. 5 Fenwick (4-0). De La Salle (1-3) cut the margin to 28-25 on Jarrett Anderson`s 8-yard run with 1:55 to play.

Stephens carried 20 times for 128 yards.

”I saw (Stephens) get fired up in the second half when he knew the game was on the line,” Fenwick coach Richard Ambrosino said.

Fenwick`s Nick Braithwaite blocked two punts to set up touchdowns. Renaldo Wynn carried 26 times for 104 yards and two touchdowns for De La Salle.

Thornton 20, Thornwood 12-Floyd Coleman (5 of 12 for 190 yards) and John Davis (three receptions, 138 yards) collaborated on an 89-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter that set the tone for Thornton`s SICA East victory. Keith Wordlaw added a 2-yard touchdown run with 9:12 left in the third quarter.

”Everything I saw on offense I liked, and our defense played very well,” Thornton coach Bill Mosel said. ”Floyd has been around for four years and he stepped up.”

Jim Berquist scored on a 1-yard sneak and hit Brian Gallegos with an 18-yard touchdown pass for Thornwood.
