Chris Smither
Another Way to Find You (Flying Fish)
(STAR)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2
Bonnie Raitt has recorded Smither`s ”Love You Like a Man” and ”I Feel the Same,” but the East Coast singer-songwriter hasn`t had anywhere near Raitt`s success with his own records. Recorded live before a small audience in a Boston studio with just his voice and acoustic guitar, Smither`s intimate
”Another Way to Find You” is a joy. A gruff-voiced singer but sweet-pickin` guitarist, his delightfully eclectic cover versions range from delta bluesman Blind Willie McTell`s ”Statesboro Blues” to the Grateful Dead`s ”Friend of the Devil.” But it`s Smither`s own songs that impress most, ranging from the bluesy title track to introspective numbers like ”A Song for Susan” and ”Don`t Drag It On.”
