player ready...Robbie Nevil
Day 1 (EMI) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2
Those who remember Robbie Nevil`s slick, blue-eyed soul hit ”C`est La Vie” from a few years ago may be surprised to find lots of in-your-face guitar heroics on ”Day 1.” It turns out that Nevil was an ace guitarist long before he became a mainstream pop recording artist. Now superficially stock dance-pop material such as ”Just Like You” and ”For Your Mind” is given an additional edge by Nevil`s fretwork. The former tunesmith for David Lee Roth, the Pointer Sisters and Earth, Wind and Fire still knows how to write a good hook, as proven by ”Goin` Through the Motions” and ”Partners in Crime.”
There`s even a Sly and the Family Stone tribute (”Temptation”) featuring original members Rose Stone and Larry Graham. This one may be a guilty pleasure, but Nevil`s prodigious talents as a vocalist, songwriter and guitarist can`t be denied.
