That`s the contention of gardening-industry experts, who are seeing a boom among business and professional people picking up spades and hoes.
According to the National Gardening Association, retail sales for lawn and gardening supplies blossomed to more than $20.8 billion in 1990, a 20 percent increase over 1989, and most purchases now are being made by Baby Boomer professionals.
Adds gardening author Michael Pollan: ”You find (people) who normally would spend coffee breaks talking about sports and families, now talking about what`s going on in their gardens.”
Pollan attributes the trend to society`s increasing craving for a more direct relationship with nature. He also notes that more men are enjoying the satisfaction of working the soil.
”People have discovered that. . . it`s certainly as rigorous as jogging. It combines physical and mental exertion.”
