Reliever Dave Smith will be activated when the rosters expand on Sunday, but it could be a while before he sees his next save opportunity.

Smith threw about 15 minutes of batting practice Friday afternoon to test his right knee, which underwent arthroscopic surgery on July 25.

”He`s still experiencing some pain,” manager Jim Essian said. ”He`s throwing the ball well, but when he makes a lateral move there`s still some pain. We don`t want to rush him.

”I don`t think he`s ready to throw yet in a critical situation. We`ll ease him in with an inning here and there and see how his control is.”

– Luis Salazar was glowing over the end of the White Sox`s nine-game losing streak. He also had a little bit of advice for his old team.

”I think they should have let Melido Perez start,” said Salazar, who follows the South Siders closely. ”The other starters are struggling.”

And he said they need to relax and enjoy the pennant race. ”That`s how it was for us in `89,” he said. ”We didn`t worry about anybody else. We just went out and had fun.”

– Midnight Saturday is the trading deadline for players to be eligible for playoff rosters. Dodger General Manager Fred Claire said the club had no plans to make a late bid for Shawon Dunston to fill its hole at shortstop.

– Kevin Gross (8-9) replaced Orel Hershiser in a change of Dodger starting pitchers for Saturday night`s game. The club said Hershiser had tenderness in his surgically repaired right shoulder.
