Richard X. Heyman

Hey Man! (Sire) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)

”Hey Man!” features a revealing photo of Richard X. Heyman painting a scene from a recording studio. It`s a milieu he knows well, having played virtually all the instruments and sung all the vocals on this tuneful pop offering that resounds with `60s echoes of the Beatles, the Byrds and the Hollies. Heyman`s approach is appropriately ”painterly,” giving each song just what it needs: a sparse piano and strings setting for ”To Whiskey Flats,” an electric 12-string guitar for ”Falling Away” and a bluesy harmonica for ”Sidetracked.” Studio references also creep into the lyrics.

”I need to read her V.U. meter,” he sings on ”Loud,” while advising

”That`s all you get/No reprise and no second take” in ”The Waking Hour.” No, there`s nothing really original here, but as ear candy goes, ”Hey Man!” sure sounds sweet.
