Subdudes

Lucky (East West) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)

From New Orleans by way of Colorado, frequent Chicago visitors the Subdudes achieve an appealingly folksy and homespun ambiance on their second album. ”Lucky” is deceptively laid back: While acoustic guitars and accordions are prominent on songs like ”Push and Shove” and ”Someday, Somehow,” the quartet`s vocals never lose their soulful edge. Primary vocalist Tommy Malone has a Bob Seger-like quality to his voice, but this album is more classic American rock than ”classic rock.” Dense group harmonies recalling the Band`s cushion Malone`s voice on ”Dolly`s Song” and ”Another Heartbreak Now,” while the group`s cover of Al Green`s classic

”Tired of Being Alone” is both courageous and on the mark. Easygoing but never lazy, ”Lucky” is a perfect album for languid summer days and nights.
