Wimbledon in Bannockburn: While others just watched the finals of the world`s most famous tennis tournament, the members of the Bannockburn Bath & Tennis Club decided to have a classic Wimbledon weekend of their own.

”The genesis of this was a few months ago when we decided we wanted to do some different kind of an activity,” said Ron March, a Deerfield resident and chairman of the tournament committee. Someone suggested using old-fashioned wooden rackets and then someone else suggested the players also dress in the traditional Wimbledon whites such as those worn by players 50 to 60 years ago.
In spite of the 90-degree heat, players in the round robin tournament, held the same weekend as the Wimbledon finals, stuck to their plan. ”One of the ladies was wearing a full-length dress from the 1920s. Another man played in white slacks and a tie and a hat, and someone else wore a white wool sweater,” March recalled.
Refreshments, according to Wimbledon tradition, included strawberries and cream and champagne served on the patio. The weekend was such as success that it may well become an annual event, March said.
