While most area jean shops don`t carry merchandise that costs $100 on the average, St. Pierre does-and its owners are proud of it. ”The older they get, the better they get,” says co-owner Marianna Schwartz. ”In time, our jeans begin to feel suede-ish. And the fit is incredible.”

No chemicals are used on the jeans sold by Schwartz and her partner/

husband, Lewis. Instead, the materials get that prewashed look and feel from rock pounding or from hard blasts of water, she says. The denim is then dried for hours to make sure it is preshrunk and very soft.

Lines carried by the Highland Park shop-a two-story storefront with one floor for women, one for men-include Aviatic and Big Star from France and Replay from Italy with styles ranging from ultra skin-tight to palazzo.

And while there are also chunky, weighty, sterling silver belt buckle sets with attachable alligator, lizard and calf straps and a selection of shirts and jackets, Schwartz says, ”We don`t use the word `outfit` here, and the emphasis is definitely on European denims.”

St. Pierre, 1847 Second St., is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday with hours extended to 8 p.m. Thursdays. Call 708-926-9160.
