Doug Dascenzo set a fielding record without handling a chance Friday afternoon.
Dascenzo made his 227th consecutive errorless appearance in the outfield, topping Curt Flood`s National League record. Dascenzo has handled 421 chances flawlessly, though none came in Friday`s 5-2 victory over Houston at Wrigley Field.
The next mark for Dascenzo, who has never committed an error in the majors, would be Don Demeter`s major-league record of 266 games, set from 1962 to 1965 with Philadelphia and Detroit.
Since Flood handled 566 chances while setting his record, Dascenzo downplayed the streak. ”I`ve gone in the last few years and played an inning or two of defense and not made any plays,” he said. ”I`ll always remember this day. But it`s not as big a day as the day we clinched the division in Montreal (in 1989).”
– Jose Vizcaino had four hits Friday and has five in a row, three of them doubles, since Shawon Dunston left Thursday night`s game with a slightly strained right bicep. The fact did not escape Greg Maddux, who asked Dunston, ”Who was that guy who took the day off before Lou Gehrig played first base for the Yankees?”
The answer: Wally Pipp. Dunston could only roar with laughter and announce his intention to return Saturday-if manager Jim Essian lets him.
The last time Vizcaino had four hits in a game was May 4 in Atlanta. He had one single in his next 13 at-bats.
– Rick Sutcliffe said he expected to make two starts at Triple-A Iowa before returning to the Cubs. The first will be Monday night in Des Moines, followed most likely by a Saturday game in Indianapolis.
