Doug Dascenzo tied a National League record Sunday night with his 226th defensive appearance without an error. Dascenzo can break Curt Flood`s record Thursday in Wrigley Field.

Dascenzo`s streak is the longest to open a career in major-league history. Going into Sunday night, he had handled 414 total chances flawlessly. The major-league record for consecutive outfield errorless games is 266 games, owned by Don Demeter.

So there: Don`t tell George Bell the All-Star Game doesn`t count. Bell goes back to Toronto Monday with a definite goal in mind.

”I`m going to show them that the National League is the best,” Bell said. ”The AL beat them last year, but this year`s a different story.”

Bell, making his third All-Star appearance, was a member of the American League club that won in Wrigley Field. Bell often had a stormy relationship with fans during his eight-year tenure with the Jays, and he wouldn`t speculate about how they`d react to his return.

”They love me up there,” he joked.

Bell, removed from Saturday night`s game with tenderness in his left knee, returned to the lineup Sunday night. He`s scheduled to participate in Monday`s home run-hitting contest.

Bad news: Joe Girardi has suffered another setback. The Cubs` ailing catcher, out since April 11 with disc problems in his back, will miss a scheduled rehabilitation start for Class-A Peoria Wednesday night. He`s been ordered to rest for three days before resuming his regimen.

No off day: The Cubs will have a mandatory workout Wednesday afternoon in Wrigley Field for everyone but their three All-Stars. The players will give up a day off to work on the fundamentals they`ve been butchering since the season began.

”We`re going to break a little sweat, hit a little, and work on some of the mistakes we`ve made in the first half,” manager Jim Essian said.
