Sue Medley
Sue Medley (Mercury) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR)
Blessed with a husky, powerhouse voice, Canadian singer-songwriter Sue Medley straddles several genres on her debut: a mainstream rock-oriented style laced with blues and country tinges.
On bluesy rockers like ”Love Thing” and ”Heart of Mine” she recalls vintage Bonnie Raitt, aided by some ace slide guitar from Sonny Landreth.
But Medley is no imitator, and her evocative vocals highlight the country-ish ”Dangerous Times,” written in response to China`s Tienanmen Square uprising, and ”That`s Life,” an in-your-face rocker propelled by the familiar whomp of John Mellencamp drummer Kenny Aronoff`s snare drum.
