Nick Robertson
Bullet Proof Boy (Charisma) (STAR)(STAR)(STAR) 1/2
He may not be the second coming of Van Morrison, but 26-year-old Scottish singer-songwriter Nick Robertson unleashes his own appealing brand of
”Caledonian soul” on this debut album. He`d better be bulletproof, because critics ought to have a field day comparing his pop/folk/R & B melange to Morrison`s ”Tupelo Honey”/”Astral Weeks” period. But Robertson could do much worse than be likened to Van. His album nicely mixes exuberant rockers
(”Mind Reader,” ”Slice of Heaven”) with introspective, acoustic tunes like ”She`s Looking Tired.” Robertson and former Lone Justice singer Maria McKee beautifully intertwine their voices on ”Pride & Joy.” Despite an occasional close brush with lyrical preciousness, this is a most impressive debut.
