Glenbrook South, after languishing in the cellar of the Central Suburban South all year, rose up Tuesday night and stunned Central Suburban North kingpin Glenbrook North 95-92 in overtime in the Class AA Niles West sectional.

The loss dampened a wondrous performance by North`s Chris Collins, son of former Bulls coach Doug Collins, who poured in 45 points.

Eric Berg had 36 points, Tom Morton 28 and Scott Lidskin 17 for South, which is now 10-15 overall after finishing 1-7 in the CSL South.

Collins wielded the hot hand as North, which never led in regulation, rallied from a 57-41 halftime deficit to force the overtime on two free throws by Collins with 3 seconds left in regulation. Collins had 20 points in the fourth quarter.

But North gave up a two-point lead in the final minute of overtime by committing two turnovers, enabling South to take the edge for good.

Gordon Tech didn`t miss Tom Kleinschmidt at all as the Rams battered Niles North 94-66 in another Niles West sectional game.

Kleinschmidt, who led Gordon to the state finals a year ago, is sidelined for this year`s tournament with a broken foot. But Antoine Gillespie (23 points) and Jason Bey (17) scored seven and six points, respectively, as the Rams (22-3) built a 20-2 lead with 3 minutes 50 seconds left in the first quarter and were never threatened. The Rams led 30-8 at the end of the quarter.

Arthur Stewart (15 points, seven rebounds, three blocks) scored 11 of the Rams` next 17 points to help Gordon to a 55-25 halftime lead.

”We told the kids going into the game that they each had to be a man-and-a-half to pick up the slack with Tom out of the lineup,” said Gordon coach Steve Pappas. ”We got mentally lazy at times in the second and third quarters, but when the game was on the line early, I thought we played especially well.”

Ron Mattner had 23 points (13 in the second half), Paul O`Malley 14 (nine in the fourth quarter) and Jim Meacham added 11 points and seven rebounds for Niles North (1-25).

Rick Hielscher scored eight of his 10 points as New Trier (16-8) jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first 1:13, sparking the Trevians to a 78-36 victory. Hielscher turned his ankle late the first half and didn`t play the second half but is expected to be ready for Friday`s regional title game.

”We were a step quicker than they were,” said New Trier coach Mel Sheets. ”We had the big kids inside. We didn`t think that they could take the ball outside and hurt us.”

”It was our worst shooting game of the year,” said Leyden coach Joe Tullo, whose team (9-15) made only 15 of 52 while the Trevians converted 31 of 58.

Chris Busyn led New Trier with 11 points.

In other games, 13 players scored as second seed Weber (22-4) set a school record for wins with its ninth straight victory, 73-41 over Holy Cross. Kevin Geredine had 10 points and 14 rebounds and Jevon Hobbs had 10 points and five assists for Weber. Rob Feaster had 23 points, Peter Patton 12 and Mark Franz 11 as Loyola Academy (17-9) beat Notre Dame 56-41.

York sectional-Proviso East, the state`s No. 1-ranked team, rolled over Riverside-Brookfield 101-34 and will meet Lyons Friday. Sherell Ford scored 20 points to lead the Pirates (25-1), while Michael Finley had 17 and Donnie Boyce added 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Proviso put the game away early, using seven turnovers to key a 22-0 run that produced a 33-8 lead. Boyce had two dunks in one 19-second span and had six points in the run, and Ford scored nine.

”We wanted to go full-court to start and come out aggressive, force an up-tempo game and not let them hold the ball, hit shots and get confidence,” said Proviso East coach Bill Hitt. ”We played aggressive and smart.”

Jamie Guido led R-B (11-15) with 11 points, including three three-pointers.

Nazareth Academy (26-0), the only undefeated Class AA team in the Chicago area, stormed past Argo 72-62 with four players scoring in double figures. Bob Krahulik led with 24 points, 21 coming in the second half, Sean Pearson added 16, Marcus Poe 13 and Mack Brown 11. Maurice Bradley had 24 points and 12 rebounds and Greg Williams had 15 points for Argo (17-11).

”Bobby took it upon himself to take control of the game in the second half,” said Nazareth coach Tom Richardson. ”I`m sure when Sean went out of the game a lot of people thought that was it for us, but we proved we`re not a one-man team.”

Pearson went to the bench with his fourth foul of the game with :52 left in the third quarter. Nazareth led 45-42 entering the fourth quarter. Krahulik had 12 points and Poe 10 as Nazareth outscored Argo 27-20 in the final eight minutes.

Proviso West (22-3) overwhelmed Morton 81-56 with Sheldon Jones scoring 17 points off the bench. De La Salle (18-7) ousted Catholic League rival St. Rita 61-51 with Cory Foster and Marcus Patterson each bagging 14 points. Mack Cleveland managed 15 for St. Rita (8-17).

The 1-2 punch of Gerald Eaker (25 points) and William Gates (20 points)

were too much for Willowbrook in an 80-58 loss to No. 2 seed St. Joseph

(23-3). Darrell Ramsey scored 23 points, Chris Simich 14 and Mike Jackson and Brian Nelson 12 apiece as Lyons (15-9) ousted Fenwick 69-52. Brian Ballarini had 14 for Fenwick (10-16).

Waukegan sectional-Top-seeded Stevenson led 28-1 after one quarter on the way to 107-70 victory over Grayslake. Stevenson (24-2) opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run to go ahead 38-1. Chris Coleman finished with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Jeff Turnbull added 16 points and Eric Roth 12 as all 15 Stevenson players scored. Jim Silva had 19 points for Grayslake (6-20).

”A lot of people thought we might look by them but we came out ready to play,” said Stevenson coach Ken Johnson.

Second seed Warren hammered Lake Zurich 100-43 behind Tim Kohn`s 20 points and No. 4 seed Waukegan (18-8) advanced with Shawn Frieson (17 points) and Ryan Bennett (13) leading the way in a 56-38 victory over Antioch. Andy Hayley had 15 for the losers (10-17).

Libertyville (20-6) recovered from a slow second quarter to outscore Zion-Benton 20-11 in the third period to claim a 65-47 victory. Andy Bauer led Libertyville with 17 points. Brian Davis added 16 and Matt Williams 15.
