False alarm. The reported hamstring pull that was said to have sidelined goalie Ed Belfour in the closing minutes of Thursday`s 5-4 loss to Buffalo turned out to be nothing more serious than a muscle seizure in his stomach.

”You know how it tightens up on you sometimes,” Belfour explained Friday after going through a full practice routine. ”I think it happened when (Alexander) Mogilny was taking about three whacks at the puck near the net and I had to come across with my leg.”

Belfour has started 26 of the last 28 games and 10 straight, a strong 7-2-1 in that span. He and his defense have limited the opposition to two or fewer goals in six of those games.

”We`ll see how he is Saturday,” coach Mike Keenan replied when asked if he might rest Belfour rather than play him Saturday night against Toronto.

”It doesn`t look as serious as we might have thought at first.”
