player ready...That steamroller propelled by the Presidents Commission hit its only pothole at this convention during votes on restructuring. That issue passed, in principle, but without two important provisos its proponents were seeking in their effort to tighten membership requirements in Division I by some 50 schools.
The first was their attempt to get indoor and outdoor track counted as a single sport, instead of two. That went down 183-141. The other was its attempt to have only athletically related aid count in a school`s effort to meet the $500,000 in scholarships (excluding football and basketball) it had to give out to belong to Division I.
That was challenged by an amendment brought forward by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, which sought to have all aid counted against that minimum. When that amendment passed 161-160, those schools that reward their athletes with institutional grants found their status in Division I preserved.
”We got a shell,” grumped Southwest Conference Commissioner Fred Jacoby, the chairman of the restructuring committee.
”It wouldn`t surprise me if we end up with virtually no institutions not qualifying for Division I,” added PAC 10 Commissioner Tom Hansen, a member of the restructuring committee.
”It was a great victory. It was a victory for those who want to keep academics and athletics,” said MAAC Commissioner Rich Ensor. ”Some of the schools would have had to come up with $400,000 (if his group`s amendment hadn`t passed). Now I doubt that we`ll lose any.”
