The McDome issue heated up Wednesday, with coach Mike Ditka taking up for team President Michael McCaskey and Chicago Ald. Robert Shaw ripping McCaskey. ”I think Mike`s statement should be heeded,” Ditka said about McCaskey`s implication that the Bears might have to leave the city to build a new stadium after legislative leaders tabled the McDome proposal until the spring.

”He is a more patient man than I am. I would`ve made my bed somewhere already. I think you can only beat your head up against a brick wall so many times and start bleeding. He`s hurt now because he`s compromised everything he`s believed in by going indoors, putting a dome over it and not having natural grass. Yet he gets it shoved in his face.”

Shaw has no sympathy for McCaskey or the Bears if they leave the city.

”I will personally purchase a Greyhound bus ticket with a toilet on it so he won`t have to stop on his way out of town,” Shaw told WMAQ radio Wednesday.

Ditka said he isn`t certain how long it will be before the Bears make their move.

”I wouldn`t say it`s going to happen immediately,” Ditka said. ”But I`d say down the line it wouldn`t be bad for the Bears to find another place to play in, maybe Waukegan.”

Butler`s time is up? Ditka was asked Wednesday about Kevin Butler`s statement on radio that the Bears would draft another placekicker and that he would catch on with another team.

”Did he make that prediction?” Ditka said. ”He`s very clairvoyant.”

Still limping: Cornerback Donnell Woolford said his sprained ankle was still sore after Wednesday`s workout.

”It still doesn`t feel that good,” Woolford said as he gingerly made his way down a Halas Hall stairway. Ditka said he expected Woolford to be ready for Sunday`s game against Detroit.

New Bear in town: The club added cornerback James Lott to the practice squad. Lott played at Clemson with Woolford and was a free agent with the Bears until being released Aug. 26 in the club`s first cutdown. The practice squad is at the five-man maximum with Lott, wide receiver Quintin Smith, offensive lineman Roman Matusz, linebacker Dante Jones and defensive lineman Terry Price.

A second chance: Fullback Pat Chaffey, drafted in the fifth round by the Bears, has signed with New England as an H-back. He replaces David Little, out for the season with a knee injury. Chaffey was waived after the final cut.
