Peoria Manual made its final appearance in the Lockport Thanksgiving Tournament a successful one for coach Dick Van Scyoc. The Rams, who will play in the Danville tourney next year after five years at Lockport, defeated Thornridge 86-74 Saturday night to take the championship and climb to 4-0.

Manual`s small, quick squad forced Thornridge to turn the ball over on eight of its first 10 possessions, and the Rams jumped to a 14-3 lead with less than four minutes gone. By halftime, they were up 52-31 and Thornridge had 20 turnovers.

But Thornridge (1-3) didn`t fold. Coach Mike Flaherty`s club scratched back to within eight points twice in the fourth quarter.

De Paul-bound Howard Nathan led Manual with a 31 points, 18 in the second half. Keith Sydnor added 13 and Mike Grayer 12.

”Nathan made a couple of great plays and a couple of silly ones,” Van Sycoc said of his star guard`s seven steals and five turnovers.

”He`s getting better all the time. The trouble is, when you play one-on- one at camps all summer, it takes time to get back in the team concept we need.

”We played awfully well the first 14 minutes. Our defense really got after it at the start of the game, but we have to do a better job of taking care of the ball.” Manual had 23 turnovers.

Thornridge was led by Ivan Patterson with 21. Terry Hutton scored 18 and Cody Johnson 12.

No. 7 Chicago Vocational (2-2) took a 25-23 halftime lead and Tyrone Smith poured in 13 of his game-high 15 points in the second half to lead the Cavaliers past Lockport 55-40. Smith added seven rebounds, and Mike Lampley contributed 14 points and 12 rebounds.

CVS coach Dick Cook benched Michigan-bound star Juwan Howard (5 of 17 from the field, 1 of 3 from the foul line and five rebounds) for most of the fourth quarter.

Lyons Township tournament-No. 4 St. Joseph (3-0) beat Lyons 60-47 behind William Gates (23 points, five rebounds) and Jamal Robinson (15 points, six rebounds).

”We`re still very young,” said St. Joseph coach Gene Pingatore. ”Thank God we have Gates; he`ll give time for the others to come around. What he did tonight is what I expected.”

In the first game, No. 8 Thornton (1-2), with sophomore point guard Brian Kelley scoring 11 of his career-high 27 points during a 15-2 second-quarter run, shot down Fenger 87-65. Ronald Chew added 19, Mike Allen 18 and Melvin Smith 15 for Thornton. Terrance Briggs had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Fenger.

”I tried to tell the kids, if you work hard, you win,” said Thornton coach Sam Cameli. ”Tonight, we brought in a sophomore at point guard, and he made things happen. He can score and penetrate. This was his first time out. He hasn`t even practiced with us yet.”

Topper Classic-No. 5 King (1-1) walloped North Vermillion 92-36. The defending Class AA state champions, rebounding from Friday`s loss to Danville that ended a three-year 34-game winning streak, were led by 7-0 sophomore Rashard Griffith (35 points), Thomas Hamilton (22 points, 15 rebounds), Johnny Harris (11 points) and Tyree Kirby (10 points).

Westinghouse, with its famed full-court press forcing St. Pat into several turnovers, took a 50-47 lead into the fourth quarter and held on.

”We still didn`t give them a full 32 minutes of Westinghouse defense,”

coach Roy Condotti said. ”If we had, it would have been different. Maybe we became a team tonight. We were looking for something to bring us together.”

”They were just too quick, but we settled down and made a game of it,”

said St. Pat coach Max Kurland, still one win away from joining the 600-victory club.

In the first game, Lane (1-2) used a 13-3 third-quarter run to break from a 22-22 halftime deadlock to a 50-35 victory over Steinmetz.

Rob Bennett had 11 points for St. Charles (2-1).

”It took us a little over two quarters to get our offensive pattern down, getting the ball down to our big guys,” said Waubonsie coach Spike Grosshuesch. ”Once we did that, we were able to control the game.”

Waubonsie held St. Charles star Matt Gullickson, who had scored over 20 points in his first two games, to seven.

Rick Hielscher (29 points, 11 rebounds) and Chris Busyn (12 points, 12 rebounds) led New Trier (2-1) past East Aurora 70-62 for third place. Jeremy McGhee had 21 points for East Aurora (1-2).

Leyden`s Jason Stella had 21 points and seven assists, Steve Apt 17 points and four assists,

”The first three games, teams ran gimmick defenses on us,” Elgin coach Jim Harrington said. ”We saw a triangle-and-two, halfcourt trap and tonight a 1-2-2 zone. That`s too much to practice in one day. We had a hard time and struggled.” In the second game, Chris Wyllie 29 points sparked York (1-2) to a 63-53 victory over Hersey (0-3).
