Simeon 54, Waubonsie Valley 29-Simeon (9-2) put to rest any notion that Pubic League teams can`t compete with the rest of the state by trouncing host Waubonsie (7-3). The Wolverines` leading rusher, LaShawn White, only had 27 yards, but quarterback Antoine Patton put on a passing show, completing 12 of 22 passes for 356 yards and 6 touchdowns.
Receivers Reggie Britton, Jameel Nash, and Stephen Thompson raced for five of those (Nash added another TD on a 30-yard interception return), including a spectacular 98-yard pass play from Patton to Britton. Ahead 20-7 after the first half, Simeon started the third quarter with a 56-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Loma Smoot. Gilbert Moseley added the Wolverines`
eighth touchdown on a 45-yard run late in the game.
”We`ve been underrated because of our loss to Mt. Carmel (a 35-20 defeat), then we were downhearted and dropped a game to King (in double overtime), but I`m not surprised by this,” said Simeon coach Al Scott. ”It wasn`t an upset to us. We saw them on film and we saw some weaknesses, mainly in the secondary, and the main advantage we had was speed.”
