Jose Santos made a little extra traveling money when he swept the juvenile events with a victory on favored Fly So Free in the $1 million Breeders` Cup Juvenile.

The superstar rider, racing`s leading money earner the last four years, will change his base of operations from New York to Southern California soon. The prospects weren`t as clear cut as with Meadow Star in the Juvenile Fillies, but the result was the same-Santos guiding his freshman mount to a solid victory.

”At the start, I picked him up a bit; I wanted to get him out,” he said. ”I kept him out to not clip heels with Angel Cordero`s horse (Fire In Ice).”

After breaking eighth in the 11-horse field, Santos kept Fly So Free near the pace. He took control by a head after six quarters and continued on to a three-length score. Longshots Take Me Out and Lost Mountain finished second and third respectively.

Fly So Free paid $4.80, $3.60 and $3.20.

The victory was the second Breeders` Cup win for trainer Scotty Schulhofer.

”I guess today proved that he is as good as I thought he was all along,” he said. ”This was just as sweet (as Smile`s sprint win in 1986), but more satisfying.”

The crowd saw Best Pal as a definite threat, but the second choice in the wagering flattened out to sixth after making a menacing move to third turning for home.
