Neal Anderson figured he was through for the day, having gained 97 yards on 19 carries with his two touchdowns in staking the Bears to a 17-0 lead. Then, with just over a minute to go, Anderson and running backs coach Johnny Roland approached coach Mike Ditka.
”It was a joint effort,” Anderson said about the proposition to re-enter the game and take a crack at 100 yards. ”I thought it would be a great way to start off the season, with 100 yards.”
The Ditka of old might`ve growled at such a suggestion and told both of them where to go. A not-so-Iron Mike said to go for it. Anderson gained four yards and came away happy.
