It will be the end of an era when Crate & Barrel quietly leaves Wells Street in late September.
”It`s too small and there is no parking,” explains Gordon Segal of the decision to close the company`s oldest operating shop and put the building up for sale.
First opened in 1965, the store was a magnet for shoppers in the heyday of Old Town, when it was the gathering spot for trendy consumers in the 1960s.
Though it wasn`t the first C&B (that was in a building just down the block), this location has been an outlet for selling end-of-season and close- out merchandise in recent years. A new and bigger store will reopen at the intersection of North Avenue and Halsted Street.
